A first settlement by Europeans in this area took place as early as 1636, but these settlements were abandoned again. The area was finally settled in 1713. One of the first settlers was William Royall in 1646, who started a riverside farm. The area still bears his name today, another was John Cousins ​​a few years earlier, who settled a headland and an island. This one still bears his name today. The land was bought from the Abenaki , to whom the principle of permanent land ownership was alien and who assumed that they had only given the land for a while.

Despite the town's disapproval, State Route 295 was built along the harbor in 1961, which now separates the waterfront from the town.
