Travis Matthew Roy (* 17th April 1975 in Yarmouth , Maine ) is a former American college - hockey player . In his first game for Boston University , he injured himself so badly after eleven seconds on the ice that he has since been paraplegic from the neck down .

Career

Roy began ice skating at the age of 20 months and graduated from Taber University . He then received an ice hockey scholarship at Boston University in the summer of 1995 . On October 20, 1995, his first game for the university team, Roy was seriously injured on his first move after just eleven seconds on the ice. After an opponent dodged a body check by Roy, his head hit the edge of the field. He broke his fourth (C4) and fifth (C5) cervical vertebrae , which has left him paraplegic from the neck down . His jersey with the number 24 has not been given to other players since the accident.

As a result, Roy continued his college education just a year after his injury, which he successfully completed in 2000. In addition, despite his disability, the American worked as an assistant coach at Boston University in the 1997/98 season and in the same year founded the Travis Roy Foundation , which supports people with spinal cord injuries caused by accidents . With the support of Sports Illustrated author EM Swift , he wrote his 1998 autobiography, "Eleven Seconds: A Story of Tragedy, Courage & Triumph" .

Today Roy gives motivational speeches and works intermittently as a co-commentator for the college ice hockey broadcasts of the TV station ESPN .
