Time penalty (also penalty time ) is imposed in some sports in order to be able to punish rule violations.

Common time penalties are:

  • Drive-through (drive-through penalty) - for example, in Formula 1 for a jump start, illegal overtaking and greater maximum speeds. If this penalty cannot be taken for certain reasons, such as premature end of the race or the penalty was pronounced in the last lap, a time penalty will be added to the respective end time for the respective driver at the end of the race.
  • Direct time penalties - a time penalty is added to the athlete to the race time, for example in cycling a few minutes are charged to the time account for handicaps of other drivers or other rule violations.
  • Time penalties for team sports - e.g. B. In handball , ice hockey or floorball, a single player has to sit on the bench for a few minutes after certain fouls . Your own team then plays outnumbered.
