history
The township was awarded in 1734 by Massachusetts General Court to Abraham Howard, Joseph Blaney, and 58 other people from Marblehead. New Marblehead Plantation was established in 1737 as a settlement by Captain Thomas Chute. The Massachusetts General Court ordered a fort to be built in the center of the settlement in the spring of 1744 to provide protection during the King George's War . It was equipped with two rotating basses. The residents stayed within the palisades between 1745 and 1751. The last Indian attack on the site occurred on May 14, 1756. New Marblehead Plantation became independent as Windham on June 12, 1762; the place was named after Wymondham in Norfolk / England.
Most of the early residents were farmers who found clay soil that was good for cultivation. Windham is supplied by several hydroelectric plants and a mill was built at Mallison Falls in 1738. The Cumberland and Oxford Canal opened in 1832 and was used to transport goods along the Presumpscot River between Sebago Lake and Portland. In 1859, when Windham had 2,380 inhabitants, there were eight sawmills, a corn and flour mill, two clapboard mills, a fulling mill, two carding mills, a carded yarn and textile factory, a barrel factory, a chair factory, a gunpowder factory and two tanneries. In 1886, felt, boots and shoes, wood and paper boards, carriages, harness, coffins, clothing and wooden goods were also produced in the village. On April 4, 1919, the legislature passed a law creating a men's prison in Little Falls-South Windham. Today it is the Maine Correctional Center, a low to medium security prison for men and women. With its main village North Windham, the place is now a recreation area and suburb of Portland.
