history

Bridgton was given as a grant to Benjamin Mullikin, Moody Bridges, Thomas Perley, and other men by the Massachusetts General Court in 1761 . The grant was divided into 86 parts. Sixty-one parts were taken over by the individual owners, one for the help of the priest, one for the first priest to settle here, one for Harvard College, one for the support of the schools and one for the first settler in it Area. The remaining 20 parts were owned by the settlers in communal ownership.

The first residents named their place Bridgton in honor of Moody Bridges who was one of the first settlers. Previously, the area was called Pondicherry (after the Indian city of the same name ). Captain Benjamin Kimball undertook in 1768 in return for the grant of an area to build a comfortable house for entertainment, open a shop for goods, and keep a ship with a practical sail ready to carry cargo and passengers from Persontown to Transport to the top of Long Lake and back at a set rate whenever a settler so wishes. This for a period of seven years. In the same year, the owners of the Grants signed a contract with Jacob Stevens in the same way, stating that he would build and maintain a sawmill and grain mill, which was built on the spur of the Crotched Pond, since then known as Stevens Brook . In 1782, some land on the shores of Long Lake was given as a reward to those settlers who had made the greatest advance in the use of the land and the construction of the buildings, as a reward for their merits. Since then, these properties have been known as merited lots .

The town of Bridgton was founded on February 7, 1794. After that, prosperity rose steadily and the population also grew. In 1805 the portion of Bridgton that was on the eastern side of Long Lake was spun off , about 8,500 acres ( 3,440 hectares ) and the town of Harrison was established. The southeastern part of the town, approximately 1011 hectares (2500 acres), was partitioned off in 1834 for the establishment of the town of Naples. In return, Bridgeton received land to the west of Fryburg and Denmark in 1847. About 1416 ha (3500 ac) were added. The town is approximately 12,140 hectares (30,000 ac) in size. The soil is very suitable as arable land.
