Part of a chain of lakes from the Ice Age |
Long Lake is a 14 miles long lake in Cumberland County in Maine , USA . Its banks are completely populated due to the proximity of several small towns, especially the summer resort of Naples on its southern tip, and the town of Harrison on its northern tip. Every autumn, the lake is drained a meter to prevent flooding when the next spring's snowmelts.
Long Lake is part of an interconnected chain of lakes; it drains through the very short Chute River into Brandy Pond , a smaller lake and from there into Sebago Lake and over the Presumpscot River into the Atlantic Ocean near Portland . At the inlet into Sebago Lake, the outflow, an artificial puncture called Songo Lock , which was made in 1830, together with a natural river forms an extensive swamp area, which is protected as Sebago Lake State Park . Long Lake is accessible to ships through this penetration.
