history
In the area where Fryeburg is today, the Battle of Pequawket , also known as Lovewell's Fight, took place on May 9, 1725 . It was the last battle counted as part of the Stupid War between English immigrants and the Wabanaki Confederation . Captain John Lovewell led a group of 46 scalp hunters against the Abenaki in Pequawket, today's Fryeburg. At the time, the authorities offered a scalp premium for the first time. For an Abenaki scalp, 100 dollars were paid, which would correspond to around 15,000 euros based on today's money. The battle was related to the expansion of the settlements in New England along the Kennebec River. From the group, 34 people reached Saco Pond, now called Lovewell Pond . There they met the Pequawket under their chief Paugus with about 66 warriors. Lovewell and another 13 of the men died in the battle, as did the Indian chief Paugus and about 39 of his warriors. The survivors fled to Canada. The battle inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 's poem The Battle of Lovell's Pond on, just as Nathaniel Hawthorne to the narrative Roger Malvin's Burial and Henry David Thoreau was referring to in the book A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers for battle.
Most of Fryeburg, then still Pequawket , was given as Grant by Massachusetts to General Joseph Frye in 1762 , who had participated in the siege of Louisburg and in 1757 commanded a regiment at Fort William Henry on Lake George . That same year, Concord, New Hampshire settlers began clearing clearings and settling with their cattle.
The first settlers to settle in the area were John Stevens, Nathaniel Merrill and Limbo, a Negro slave who grazed cattle in the great meadows in the winter of 1762 and fed them with the hay they had cut the previous summer. More followed in 1763 and 1764. Nathaniel Smith arrived in the area in 1763 with his wife Betty. He built a mill on Walkers Pond.
Fryeburg was organized as a town on January 11, 1777.
Parts of the Brownfield Plantation, now the Town Brownfield, were added in 1802. Land was given to Denmark in 1813 and an area known as Texas was given to Bridgton by Fryeburg and Denmark in 1847.
