The International Air Transport Association ( IATA pronounced [ aɪˈɑːtə ], English for International Air Transport Association ) was founded as the umbrella organization of airlines in April 1945 in Havana , Cuba . It is the successor organization to the International Air Traffic Association founded on August 28, 1919 in The Hague . Its headquarters are in Montreal , Canada .

The goal of IATA is to "represent and serve" the air transport industry. The industry association aims to promote understanding of the concerns of the air transport industry and to raise “awareness of the benefits” that aviation brings to the global economy. Another goal is to promote the safe, regular and economical transport of people and goods in the air and to promote cooperation between all companies involved in international air transport services.

The organization has 300 airlines that operate around 94% of all international flights. Members are large or national airlines that operate international and intercontinental flights. Low-cost airlines , pure charter airlines and companies that only operate domestic flights are often not members of IATA.

IATA enters into so-called strategic partnerships with airports, flight authorities, travel agencies, supply and ground handling companies, companies in the aviation industry and other interested parties, of which more than 300 exist.

In Germany the organization maintains a representative office in Frankfurt am Main , in Switzerland in Geneva , and for Austria the office in Prague is responsible.

tasks

The IATA tries to simplify the processes in the aviation business. This concerns z. B. the standardization of tickets and luggage transport. In this way, passengers can easily travel with several airlines with a single booking without having to worry about their luggage. The same applies to freight handling.

With the exception of the USA, the association organizes the billing of flight tickets issued by travel agencies with an IATA license worldwide. More than 400 million tickets are issued through the system every year. In addition, the IATA influences the price formation in international air traffic.

It creates anonymised statistics for the aviation companies so that they can measure themselves against other market participants.

IATA codes ensure that airports , airlines and aircraft types can be identified . IATA codes for airports are three-digit, for airlines two-digit. There are “controlled duplicates”, and codes can also have been assigned to several companies with a time difference; therefore IATA codes do not allow a clear assignment, a shortcoming that brings the use of the ICAO codes extended by one digit into discussion.

In addition, security standards are defined and also controlled, which are binding for all members.

The organization also offers support for startup airlines, authorities, airports, etc.

IATA is not only funded through membership fees (at least $ 15,000 per year), but also through the sale of services, manuals, statistics and electronic documents.

history

The establishment of the predecessor organization in 1919, i.e. H. Just one year after the end of the First World War , it showed that the increased economic possibilities of air traffic, which were made possible due to the technical advances achieved during the war, were soon recognized.

Shortly before the end of the Second World War , IATA was re-established on April 19, 1945 in the Hotel Nacional in Havana. At the time of its re-establishment, it had 57 members from 31 predominantly European and North American nations.

One of its main functions was price setting and performance agreements in international air traffic, which were effective until the 1990s or until around 2006 and then - like other similar regulations - were terminated for anti-trust reasons.

IATA originally planned to introduce electronic flight tickets worldwide by the end of 2007. This should bring savings of up to $ 3 billion annually for the international air transport industry. This translates into a saving of $ 9 per booking and 50,000 fewer trees felled per year. For this reason, on August 27, 2007, 16.5 million tickets were ordered for the last time from seven printers. By May 31, 2008, the paper tickets had been distributed to 60,000 travel agencies and since June 1, 2008 only so-called e-tickets have been issued.

Traffic Conference Areas

In order to meet the interests of regional needs, the IATA divides the world into three conference areas, the so-called traffic conference areas , in which the respective airlines take part. The assigned areas do not correspond to the usual geographical subdivision. This is why one speaks of IATA geography . The major airlines are participants in all of these conferences.

These three areas are:

  • TC1 - First Conference Area: Greenland, North America, Central America, South America, and Hawaii
  • TC2 - Second Conference Area: Europe, Africa and parts of Asia
    divided into three sub-regions
  • TC3 - Third Conference Area: Asia and Australia

IATA clearing house

The IATA Clearing House (ICH), based in Geneva, is the clearing center for the IATA airlines. Outgoing and incoming invoices from each company are netted here. The interline agreements between the airlines form the basis for the billing . This means that an airline only has to settle with the clearing house and no longer with the other airlines. In turn, the ICH settles with the respective airline clearing house (ACH).
