Ukraine International Airlines ( Ukrainian Міжнародні Авіалінії України Mizhnarodni Avialiniyi Ukrajiny , [ˌmiʒnarodni ˌɑviɑliniji ˌukrajinɪ] ) is a Ukrainian airline based in Kiev and based on the Boryspil Airport .

history

Foundation and first years

Tupolev Tu-154B-2 Maiwald of the former Air Ukraine

The airline was founded on October 1, 1992 and started its flight operations on November 25, 1992. It was founded as the successor to the international services of Air Ukraine to offer flights between Kiev and Western Europe .

The company was the first company in the CIS , which was also founded with Western capital and purchased new Boeing 737 aircraft ex works. It was one of the first Eastern European airlines after the collapse of the Soviet Union to receive IATA-IOSA safety certification for the highest quality standards.

The founding shareholders were the Ukrainian Civil Aviation Authority and Guinness Peat Aviation (GPA), an Irish aircraft leasing company.

In 1996 the Austrian Airlines Group and Swissair invested new shares valued at US $ 9 million. In 2000 the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development invested US $ 5.4 million and became a new shareholder.

Development since 2000

Former A320 of Aerosvit Airlines

After in 2002 the merger with Air Ukraine, the successor company of the Soviet Kiev -Division of Aeroflot , foundered on the opposition of Western shareholders of UIA went, shortly after the Air Ukraine into insolvency . There is still a remaining company with a few aircraft. The inner-Ukrainian lines have since been flown by local airlines and the Ukrainian low-cost airline Aerosvit Airlines .

A cooperation between Ukraine International Airlines and Air Berlin was announced on January 19, 2010.

Ukraine International Airlines' main shareholder before full privatization was the Ukrainian state trust fund FDMU with 61.58%. The Austrian-based UIA Holding GmbH, Capital Investment Project GmbH and a third private investor held smaller blocks of shares.

On February 28, 2011, the Ukrainian state trust fund FDMU handed over its 61.58% stake in Ukraine International Airlines to private hands for UAH 287.2 million (around EUR 26 million). 36.09% of the shares went to those private investors who previously held 22.51% and now hold the majority of the shares with 58.6%. A further 15.91% was acquired by the Austria-based UIA Holding GmbH, which now owns 25.85% of the UIA shares. The third private investor is Capital Investment Project GmbH, which acquired 9.58% of the shares and now holds 15.55%.

Dniproavia AG, which belongs to the Ukrainian entrepreneur Ihor Kolomojskyj , missed out on the privatization . Kolomoyskyi considered the price of 250 million UAH demanded by the Ukrainian state trust fund FDMU to be too low and, according to media reports, had agreed to pay a total of 516.8 million UAH for the majority of the shares if the auction was held transparently.

In January 2013 it was announced that UIA intends to take over numerous routes of the financially troubled Aerosvit Airlines , including some long-haul routes such as New York and Bangkok.
