Airport stop

Vilnius Airport Railway Station

On October 2, 2008, the Vilnius Airport stop ( Lithuanian : Vilniaus oro uosto gelezinkelio stotis ) was opened near the terminal building. This makes Vilnius the only airport in the Baltic States with a direct connection to the railway network.

history

The airport's first terminal was built in what is now the airport area in 1932. However, this one did not survive. Planes from the terminal flew the Warsaw - Vilnius - Riga - Tallinn route . During the Second World War , the airport was then used as a military airfield before it was reopened for civil air traffic on July 17, 1944.

In Soviet times, the airport was operated by Aeroflot as an inland airport , from which destinations in the Asian part of the Soviet Union such as Tashkent were also served.

In 1991 it was placed under an operating company of the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and in 1993 a new terminal was inaugurated. The airport was rebuilt and expanded in accordance with the provisions of the Schengen Agreement . A new terminal was opened in October 2007 with the aim of handling three million passengers a year.

From 2013 to 2015 the Lithuanian airline Air Lituanica was based at the airport.
