The airline is named after the former Formula 1 racing driver Niki Lauda .

history

Amira Air

The LaudaMotion GmbH was established in May 2004 as Amira Air GmbH in equal parts by the Austrian investor Ronny Pecik founded and the Italian / Swiss entrepreneur Felice Gaetano de Grandi. In January 2006, Pecik took over the company completely and contributed it to his RPR private foundation . At the beginning of 2014, two more minority shareholders joined. After a few changes of managing director - u. a. also Pecik itself - in June 2013 Andrea Czvitkovits took over as the last managing director of Amira Air. As a business charter airline, Amira Air flew business people and celebrities to their destinations.

Laudamotion Executive

At the end of January 2016, Niki Lauda and his NL Holding GmbH , a subsidiary of the Lauda private foundation , took over all shares in Amira Air GmbH. He renamed it Laudamotion GmbH (with its own spelling LaudaMotion ) - a brand that he had previously used for a car rental company from 2003 to 2009 . From then on, the company's headquarters were relocated from Vienna International Airport to the Concorde Business Park near the Schwechat community . Since then, Lauda has been offering charter flights with business jets, and European and international destinations are served for the upscale clientele.

In the course of planning a takeover of the insolvent airline Niki the hitherto existing business jets fleet was in the January 29, 2018 Executive LaudaMotion renamed GmbH and on February 2, as a wholly owned subsidiary of - now mutated to holiday and line airline - Lauda Motion GmbH in Registered in the commercial register . The company with a share capital of 150,000 euros with the business purpose of "operation and rental of aircraft" has its headquarters in Schwechat in the Business Park. Since April 2018, Laudamotion Executive has been part of NL Holding GmbH again and is no longer a Laudamotion subsidiary. Laudamotion Executive currently operates four business charter aircraft from the Canadian manufacturer Bombardier .

Laudamotion

On January 23, 2018, the creditors' committee of the insolvent airline Niki gave Laudamotion the bid for the takeover. In contrast to the outdone competitors, in particular the International Airlines Group (IAG) with its cheap subsidiary Vueling , which was already involved in the German insolvency proceedings , according to the then managing director Niki Lauda, due to the Austrian operating certificate already available in his Laudamotion, the acquired Airbus aircraft could be returned more quickly get in the air.

As a result, Lauda took over the take-off and landing rights (so-called " slots ") and nine of the 21 former Niki aircraft from the bankruptcy estate . These aircraft were initially transferred to the Lufthansa Group's portfolio as part of the insolvency proceedings , but had to be leased to Laudamotion at customary market conditions due to EU requirements. The original plan was to start operations with 15 leased Airbus aircraft on March 25, 2018. On March 16, 2018, Niki Lauda announced at a press conference that they would initially take off from Vienna, Zurich, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Graz, Innsbruck and Linz to European hot water destinations with a focus on Spain and Greece in order to achieve the Relocate the focus to Austria and operate as a cheap city shuttle. Ticket sales, crew planning and other operational components were initially taken over by the sales partner Condor as starting aid , while the flight crew from the insolvent airline Niki (as far as they remained in the number of employees) was integrated into Laudamotion.

The Niki brand itself is not included in the takeover and remains in the bankruptcy estate. Instead, the company published the new company logo as a word / picture mark on its website . The big "L" in it is interpreted as a reminder of the former Lauda Air .

On March 20, 2018 it was announced that the Irish Ryanair intends to take over an initially 24.9% stake in Laudamotion. Sometimes due to the entry of Ryanair, the previous cooperation with Condor was terminated, and Eurowings also announced that it would no longer expand the short-lived cooperation with Laudamotion. Reasons for Ryanair's entry into Laudamotion are not only slots in Düsseldorf, Berlin-Tegel, Vienna and Zurich, which Laudamotion has taken over from Air Berlin , but also the option to expand its own Boeing 737 unit fleet with Airbus aircraft. Laudamotion thus fulfills the company's longstanding wish to diversify in the market. In the course of the participation in Laudamotion, however, it was decided that Laudamotion should remain an independent Austrian airline (based in Vienna ) with its own product and flight operation in the long term.

In August 2018, Ryanair announced that the purchase of 75% of the airline's shares was formally completed and plans to double Laudamotion's Airbus fleet from nine to 18, replacing the existing aircraft leased from Lufthansa. Likewise, on August 29, 2018, Managing Director Andreas Gruber announced future wage increases (for pilots up to 14%) and presented a new design for the airline. Until then, you only had a hybrid paint job with the Air Berlin logo on the vertical stabilizer. After approval by the competition authorities, the Ryanair stake was initially increased to 75% in September 2018 and taken over in full at the end of December 2018.

A legal dispute between Lufthansa and Laudamotion regarding the previously leased Airbus aircraft was settled out of court in September 2018. While Lufthansa accused Laudamotion of late payments, the other side complained about not having received all 15 jets promised to Laudamotion and that excessive rental costs had been invoiced. It was agreed to gradually return all nine leased machines to the Lufthansa Group by June 30, 2019.

In January 2019, further fleet expansion plans with 25 aircraft by summer 2019 and 30 aircraft by summer 2020 were presented. According to Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary, Laudamotion should be Austria's largest airline in ten years. During a press conference, Laudamotion announced plans to purchase at least 100 (50 orders + 50 options) Airbus A321neo for future expansion.

On March 19, 2019, a change in the management was made, as a result of which Niki Lauda left the company as managing director. Since then, Laudamotion has been led by a dual leadership consisting of Colin Casey and Andreas Gruber. Niki Lauda remained with the airline as chairman of the shareholders' committee; Laudamotion Executive remains fully owned by NL Holding GmbH.

On July 28, 2020 it was announced that Laudamotion GmbH should be closed in November 2020 and that the business would be transferred to Lauda Europe Ltd. for tax reasons. is overwritten in Malta. The employees are to be taken over by the new company. Laudamotion subsequently wants to operate on the basis of a Maltese flight license, the Austrian flight license used so far is to be returned.
