InterSky (actually InterSky Luftfahrt GmbH) was an Austrian regional airline based in Bregenz . The operational headquarters were in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance. The company ceased flight operations on November 5, 2015 and subsequently applied for insolvency proceedings.

history

Foundation and first years

InterSky was founded in 2001 by the Austrian aviation entrepreneur Renate Moser and her husband Rolf Seewald. Seewald had previously owned the Rheintalflug airline , which operated regional flights in Germany and Austria for Deutsche Lufthansa AG as part of the Lufthansa team . Shortly before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , they sold the airline to the Austrian Airlines Group . After the sale of Rheintalflug, Moser and Seewald still owned two planes that Austrian Airlines had not taken over. Because of the effects of the terrorist attacks in 2001 on the aviation industry, Moser was only able to sell one of the two aircraft. In order to employ the remaining ones, she founded InterSky Luftfahrtgesellschaft on November 5, 2001 with the proceeds from the sale of Rheintalflug, with an operational base in Bern .

The location in Bern came about because the airport director at the time, Charles Riesen, was looking for an airline across Europe to revive the abandoned Bern-Belp Airport . The first InterSky flight took place on March 25, 2002. At the beginning, she flew between the Swiss capital and the cities of Berlin and Vienna .

Supported by the owner Renate Moser, Claus Bernatzik, who joined the company as CFO in 2003 and previously worked for Rheintalflug and Eurowings, rejected InterSky's previous strategy after major losses in 2002. Following the example of the British Flybe and under the influence of the low-cost boom that had emerged in Europe, he radically changed the business model. From then on, InterSky only offered meals against payment and flight tickets were only available on the Internet via its own website. The airline was in the black within a year. In line with InterSky’s claim to grow sustainably, investments were only financed from surpluses - rather unusual for the aviation industry.

Development 2004–2010

InterSky served Berlin-Tempelhof Airport from the start . When it became known that the airport would be closed at the end of 2004, Renate Moser joined several citizens' initiatives to keep the airport open. Together with other airlines, it supported a legal dispute that finally guaranteed this until the end of October 2008. InterSky flew to Tempelhof until the end and carried out several sightseeing flights on the last day before the closure to say goodbye to the airport together with the employees. An InterSky aircraft was then also one of the last aircraft that were allowed to take off from Tempelhof. On one of the last Tempelhof flights, the pilot Viggo Bergers said goodbye in front of hundreds of onlookers with the wiggle of the wings that is common in aviation.

In 2004, after the departure of Hahn Air Lines , InterSky stationed a machine in Friedrichshafen, Germany, which was underutilized in Bern. From day one, operations were profitable, so that in 2005 the airline decided to withdraw completely from Bern and relocate all flight operations to Friedrichshafen. Most recently InterSky was the largest airline in Friedrichshafen. In 2010 it was the sixth largest low-fare airline in Germany in terms of flight movements.

In October 2009 the millionth passenger was carried. In 2010, InterSky carried 250,000 passengers, more than ever before in the company's history.

As of 2011

In May 2011, InterSky agreed on a cooperation with Air Berlin , which has since marketed all of its flights via its website.

In July 2011, the airline ran into severe financial difficulties that made restructuring necessary. Claus Bernatzik gave up his job as managing director in order to take full care of them. Renate Moser became the interim managing director. Andreas Geldner, who had been appointed by her as the second managing director shortly before, resigned from his position and moved to Niki Luftfahrt GmbH. At the same time, negotiations began with various investors. After a successful restructuring, Bernatzik left InterSky in November 2011. The last managing director of InterSky was Roger Hohl.

In the course of the reorganization, a De Havilland DHC-8-300 (registration OE-LIE) of InterSky was sold to the Maldivian airline based in the Maldives in January 2012 . Intersky made a profit again in the first half of 2012.

From January 2013 InterSky started using a newly acquired ATR 72-600 in regular service. Another ATR 72-600 was used in scheduled services from April 9, 2013.

In January 2014, co-owner Hans-Rudolf Wöhrl announced that InterSky should be merged with CityJet to form a new company in the medium term . CityJet had previously been bought up by Wöhrl's holding company Intro Aviation .

On September 16, 2015, it was announced that the airline was about to go on sale. Also in September 2015, InterSky was threatened by the Ministry of Transport with immediate withdrawal of its operating license ( Air Operator Certificate ) if the company was not in a position to prove its financial standing beyond doubt by November 3, 2015.

The four machines leased through the investment company Castlelake (2 ATR 72-600 and 2 DHC-8-300) were seized on November 5, 2015 and flown to Maastricht, after which flight operations were suspended. Shortly before, the week-long takeover talks with MDA Mitteldeutsche Aviation , which already held 76% of Air Alps , had finally failed. This had spoken out against both a complete takeover and against a restructuring process with self-administration. On November 9, 2015, an application for bankruptcy was filed with the Feldkirch Regional Court, which ordered the closure of the company on November 12.

Ownership

Until February 2012, the airline was owned by the Moser and Seewald families (50% each). Renate Moser was a managing partner. Rolf Seewald and Renate Moser retired from day-to-day business in April 2007 and have since been represented on the advisory board as owners. Moser's son Claus Bernatzik, who took over the management of InterSky in 2006, left the company at the end of 2011. In February 2012, Hans Rudolf Wöhrl and Peter Oncken (with their consulting and investment company Intro Aviation GmbH) took over 74.9% of the shares in InterSky . Renate Moser and Rolf Seewald held the remaining 25.1%.

Destinations

An InterSky De Havilland DHC-8-300 on Elba

InterSky connected Friedrichshafen Airport up to three times a day with scheduled services with Berlin-Tegel , Düsseldorf , Hamburg and Cologne / Bonn airports . In addition, Graz and Salzburg were connected with Zurich several times a day .

In the summer months from April to October, there were also flights to holiday destinations on the Mediterranean such as Elba , Olbia (Sardinia) , Calvi (Corsica) , Mahon (Menorca) , Split , Pula and Zadar from Friedrichshafen and partly from Munich , Zurich , Memmingen and Altenrhein . In 2015 there were also charter flights from Memmingen to Naples .

Since the 2010 summer flight schedule, InterSky has also offered several transfer connections via Friedrichshafen , for example from Berlin-Tegel via Friedrichshafen to destinations on the Mediterranean.

InterSky was the only airline operating between Cologne / Bonn and Friedrichshafen until March 2010, when the low-cost airline Germanwings added this route to its offer. InterSky then discontinued this connection and instead flew to Düsseldorf . After Germanwings withdrew, the Friedrichshafen – Cologne / Bonn route was re-included in the program. The connection to Münster / Osnabrück Airport was also discontinued in 2011 in favor of a higher frequency to Düsseldorf. The connection to Vienna was shortened from up to three flights per day to one flight from December 2011, among other things because of the strong competition from Austrian Airlines and People's Viennaline , which from St. Gallen-Altenrhein airport on the other side of Lake Constance also each up to Fly to Vienna three times a day. At the end of 2012, the flights to Vienna were finally discontinued.

From January 14, 2013, InterSky offered the Graz - Zurich route , which had previously been served by Crossair and the now insolvent airlines Styrian Spirit and Robin Hood Aviation . On April 2, 2013, the route from Salzburg to Zurich followed, which, after Crossair and Styrian Spirit , had been operated by Cirrus Airlines (also insolvent in 2012). Since a code- sharing agreement with Swiss did not come about, the future of the connections to Zurich was not guaranteed.

From April 9, 2013, InterSky also offered scheduled flights from its new base at the Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden airport to Hamburg. An ATR 72-200 leased from Avanti Air was used , which served the route up to three times a day. This line was taken over by the insolvent OLT Express . The flights from Karlsruhe were discontinued by InterSky after Germanwings announced to take over this route.

In July and August 2014 InterSky flew from Erfurt / Weimar to Olbia (Sardinia) .

From March 2015 Intersky flew from Memmingen to Berlin and Hamburg. Memmingen was, however, only an intermediate stop to and from Friedrichshafen , it was not possible to book the Memmingen – Friedrichshafen connection.

From October 5, 2015, Cologne / Bonn Airport was again served from Friedrichshafen via Memmingen .

Trivia

On November 26, 2013, InterSky set a world record on the flight from Friedrichshafen to Krasnodar with an ATR 72-600 aircraft and the aircraft registration OE-LID . The flight in question was the world's longest commercial non-stop flight by an ATR72-600. The flight time was 5:23 hours over a distance of 2,493 km.

On July 23, 2015, it beat its own record flight with a flight from Belfast to Tirana with an ATR 72-600. The flight time was 5 hours and 25 minutes over a distance of 2,682 kilometers. The Albanian football club Skenderbeu Korca was on board.
