Friedrichshafen Airport also serves as the home base for the German Zeppelin shipping company. It is right next to the grounds of the New Friedrichshafen Exhibition Center .

history

Today's Zeppelin hangar at Friedrichshafen Airport

The history of the airport goes back to 1913. At that time, the German Reich was looking for a site near the Zeppelin works on which the airship crews could be trained. The first airship hangar was completed there in 1915, which is considered to be the birth of Friedrichshafen Airport. In the same year the maiden voyage of the first completed airship took place. Flughafen Friedrichshafen GmbH was officially founded in 1928 . In 1929, Deutsche Lufthansa began its first scheduled flights in Friedrichshafen. In 1934, Dornier Metallbauten (DMB), the predecessor company of Dornier-Werke, built a new shipyard with a test department and flight operations at the airport.

In 1945 the French armed forces occupied what the Allies called Airfield R.58 and in November relocated three Spitfire XVI- equipped squadrons of the Forces françaises libres , which had been part of the British Air Force of Occupation , from RAF Fassberg to Friedrichshafen. This also began the expansion of the runway and the construction of many airport buildings. The French referred to their base from then on as Base aérienne Tactique 136 (BAT.136), in the first nine months of 1950 the 4ème Escadre Chasse of the Armée de l'air was located here , initially with American P-47 Thunderbolt . Later this unit flew jets, first British Vampire Mk.1 and later the Dassault Ouragan from their own country. In 1954, the French air forces moved their base to the newly built military airfield near Bremgarten . From 1966 to 1973 positions of the anti-aircraft missile battalion 33 ( MIM-23 HAWK ) of the Bundeswehr were on the premises. The troops were housed in the Luitpold barracks (Lindau) . From September 1973, the French army aviators used the place. This is where the aviation group of the 2nd French Corps, Groupe d'aviation légère du 2ème corps d'armée (GALCA 2) lay, and from September 1978 the resulting 2e régiment d'hélicoptères de combat (2 ° RHC). The main types of helicopters stationed were SA319 Alouette III , SA330 Puma and SA341 / 342 Gazelle . After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the stationing of French military machines ended in 1992.

In 1994 the airport got a new runway and the technology was brought up to date. The airfield, which was previously approved as a commercial airfield, has thus also been reclassified as an airport for general traffic. In 1998 the airport was sold by the Federal Republic of Germany to Flughafen Friedrichshafen GmbH.

Since 1997, the airport has had its own stop on the neighboring Ulm – Friedrichshafen railway line .

During the International Bodensee Airshow (IBAS) in 1998 at the St. Gallen-Altenrhein airfield on the Swiss side of Lake Constance, the two aerobatic teams Red Arrows and Frecce Tricolori were stationed in Friedrichshafen.

In winter 1999 and summer 2000, Britannia Airways flew every 14 days from Friedrichshafen to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic with a Boeing 767, with a stopover in Geneva (winter) and Munich (summer) .

In spring 2010 the low-cost airline Ryanair , which had previously flown from Friedrichshafen to London Stansted and Alicante , withdrew from Lake Constance. Since then, it has concentrated its flight operations in the region at Memmingen Airport .

Since the handling terminal was originally only designed for 500,000 passengers a year, the airport was expanded to a capacity of 1.5 million passengers with an investment of over 30 million euros. On September 1, 2010, after a 20-month construction period, the 5500 m² new terminal was opened. Sales rose in 2010 by 14 percent to 10.6 million euros, and operating profit by 15 percent to 1.5 million euros. The annual depreciation of around 3 million euros plus interest resulted in a loss of 2.6 million euros in the 2010 financial year.

Turkish Airlines has been flying to the airport directly from Istanbul since May 2, 2013, allowing the area a direct international connection. It also offers direct flights to Ankara and Antalya.

British Airways has been flying to London (Gatwick) twice a week on a seasonal scheduled basis since December 14, 2014 .

The air freight operation with the company Apron Airline Support Services from Stuttgart, which began in 2014, was discontinued at the end of September 2015 because despite great efforts it was not possible to direct air freight traffic via Friedrichshafen Airport in the desired volume.

When Intersky ceased operations on November 5, 2015, the airport lost the most important regional airline, which was responsible for 19% of the passenger volume (115,000 passengers, mainly business travelers). As a result, the number of passengers fell below the critical mark of 500,000. This no longer enables the airport to operate profitably. The situation is exacerbated by “considerable cannibalization effects from Memmingen Airport ”.

On February 15, 2016, VLM Airlines opened a new base in Friedrichshafen and flew twice a day to Düsseldorf, Berlin-Tegel and Hamburg. On June 22nd, all flights were suspended as VLM Airlines filed for bankruptcy.

Friedrichshafen Airport has gradually reduced its deficit over the years since its expansion, but was still unable to post a profit in the 2017 financial year. The reason for this was that the number of flights and passengers handled is growing only slowly and the existing capacities are not being fully utilized.

At the beginning of June 2018, Sun-Air of Scandinavia stationed a Dornier 328 at Friedrichshafen Airport and began with eleven weekly flights to Düsseldorf ; At the beginning of 2020 there were nine flights a week. With the stationing of further Dornier machines, Hamburg has been served nine times a week and Toulouse four times a week since January 2019 . However, the connection to Hamburg was discontinued on February 11, 2020 due to lack of capacity.

Destinations

As of 2020, domestic German flights to Frankfurt and Düsseldorf as well as flights to several other major European cities and, especially in the summer months, to holiday destinations in the Mediterranean region will be offered from Friedrichshafen .

AERO aviation fair

The international trade fair for general aviation, AERO, takes place annually on the airport grounds and the adjacent New Friedrichshafen Exhibition Center. It is a trade fair for business travel and private aircraft, similar to the much larger EBACE .

Furnishing

View of the airport from the north

The runway is approved in main landing direction 24 with an approach procedure of all-weather flight operation level CAT IIIb , in secondary landing direction 06 only up to CAT I.

Due to the foggy layers often encountered on Lake Constance during the winter months , the technical standard at Friedrichshafen Airport has been steadily increased. This enables scheduled flight operations even in poor visibility.

To achieve this, the existing runway and taxiway lighting was expanded to include touchdown zone and taxiway centerline lighting. With around 600 underfloor lamps, a total of around 1,300 lamps have now been installed to mark the flight operations areas.

Much emphasis is also placed on protecting nature. For example, the surface water of the entire paved operating area including the runway and taxiways is collected and forwarded separately. In addition, airports are popular relaxation and rest areas for passing migratory birds. In order to rule out any possible danger to air traffic, the green areas have been intelligently laid out: the animals are only offered a little interesting terrain directly on the runway. Quite different from the outskirts of Friedrichshafen Airport.

The airport runway was completely renovated in 1994 and provided with a particularly non-slip surface (anti-skid). This reduces both the braking distance and the wear on brakes and tires to a minimum.

In addition, Friedrichshafen Airport has the necessary infrastructure to carry out maintenance and service work (C-Checks) for short and medium-haul aircraft from the manufacturers Airbus and Boeing .
