A commercial airfield is one of the three categories of airfields in Germany, which under aviation law lies between the airport and the glider airfield . Areas for air sports equipment form a special category. In contrast to glider airfields, they have an ICAO code .

In contrast to a glider airfield, motor-powered aircraft are generally allowed to operate on landing sites; in contrast to airports, airfields do not have to be protected by a (large) building protection area according to § 12 of the Aviation Act (LuftVG) according to the air traffic licensing regulations.

In contrast to special landing areas, commercial airfields are subject to an operating obligation . They must therefore be available to General Aviation within the published opening times .

The approval for instrument flight operations requires a building protection area (BSB) according to § 12 LuftVG determined by planning approval . If it is not possible to introduce this BSB according to § 12, a restricted BSB according to § 17  LuftVG in connection with an obstacle information area can be set up instead. Places with a limited building protection area require, in addition to the aviation law approval according to § 6  LuftVG, a plan approval or plan approval according to § 8  LuftVG.
