Take-offs by gliders and non-self-launching motor gliders are carried out either with a take-off winch or by aircraft tow , other take-off types are rare.

The operating license can be extended to the use of self- launching motor gliders , free balloons and air sports equipment (e.g. ultralight aircraft ). A general permit can also be issued for motorized aircraft , but only if they are used for towing gliders, motor gliders or hang-gliders or for lowering parachutists . Landings and take-offs of all other powered aircraft are not generally permitted, but require a one-time special permit, which must be applied for from the responsible aviation authority.

In contrast to commercial airfields and special airfields, motorized aircraft may only be operated within the above-mentioned limits on glider airfields. In addition, glider airfields do not require a construction protection area in accordance with the Aviation Act .
