Airbus Defense and Space is a division (business unit) of the Airbus Group specializing in military aviation , military and civil space systems, and sensors and communications technology for defense and security. Airbus Defense and Space denotes a management structure and does not correspond to any legal person. It emerges from the previous EADS divisions Cassidian , Airbus Military and Astrium . The legal structure is currently in four companies, with the appropriate addition (GmbH, SAS, SA, Ltd.) for the countries Germany, France, Spain and Great Britain. The new structure of the division is part of extensive restructuring measures at the Airbus Group level.
In the course of further restructuring, it was decided in 2014 to divest non-core business areas. This includes the field of defense electronics (avionics, radar and systems for electronic warfare), which was combined in Airbus DS Electronics and Border Security GmbH and the former Airbus DS Optronics GmbH. On March 18, 2016, the purchase agreement for these companies was concluded with the financial investor KKR-Group . Since then, the newly founded company has been operating under the brand name Hensoldt .

history
After the merger between EADS and the British defense company BAE Systems failed, EADS boss Tom Enders saw a need for reform at EADS due to changed market structures in the European aerospace industry . With the restructuring of the parent company, Cassidian , Airbus Military and Astrium have now been merged in order to increase competitiveness and improve the general market position.
