Getafe [ xeˈtafe ] is a city in the metropolitan area of Madrid , about 14 kilometers south of central Madrid. It has a population of 183,374 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and an area of 78.74 km².

The city is an economic and industrial center and is home to many people who work in Madrid. In the years of the building boom, large new residential areas have emerged, the city is therefore connected to the Madrid Metro . Getafe also has an Air Force base . Furthermore, a research department of the aircraft manufacturer Airbus is located in Getafe , and the production and final assembly of the fuselage parts and the rear wing also take place there. The Airbus works flights (including the A 380) are carried out via the air force base.

In the urban area is the Cerro de Los Ángeles , which is considered the geographical center of the Iberian Peninsula . Sights include the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de La Magdalena from the 16th century. Part of the Carlos III University campus in Madrid is also located in Getafe .

In the center of Getafe there is a fountain called Cibelina. The Cibelina Fountain is a scaled-down replica of the famous Cibeles Fountain at the intersection of Paseo del Prado and Alcalá streets in the heart of Madrid.

Getafe FC football club plays in the Primera División .
