Cadalso de los Vidrios is a small town and a municipality in central Spain ( municipio ) with 3,039 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the autonomous region of Madrid . The historic town center was classified as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) in the conjunto histórico-artístico category.

Location and climate

The place Cadalso de los Vidrios is located in the southeastern foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama around 82 km (driving distance) west of Madrid at an altitude of around 805  m ; the cities of Ávila and Toledo are about 60 km northwest and 75 km southeast, respectively. The climate is harsh in winter, but temperate to warm in summer; Rain (approx. 395 mm / year) falls over the year with the exception of the summer months.

Although Cadalso de los Vidrios belongs to the greater Madrid area in the broadest sense, the population of the municipality has changed only slightly since the mid-19th century.

economy

In the Middle Ages , Cadalso de los Vidrios was a rural community that was large enough to serve as a craft and mercantile center (market) for the individual farms and small villages in the area. Since 16./17. In the 19th century, glass production played an important role in the municipality's economic life. Nowadays, tourism in the listed old town center is also an important source of income for the small town.

history

There is no trace of Celtiberians , Romans and Visigoths in the area around Cadalso de los Vidrios. In Islamic times the place had one or more mosques and a city wall. After the recapture ( reconquista ) Toledo by Alfons VI. from León in 1085 the place was partially repopulated ( repoblación ) by Christians from the north or from the south of the Iberian Peninsula . In 1389, Johann I gave Cadalso town rights (villa) . In the following centuries, however, the small town was largely outside the sphere of interest of the royal court; only Don Álvaro de Luna , the favorite of John II , had extensive possessions in the area.

Attractions

  • The Palacio de Villena , built from granite stones by Álvaro de Luna around 1530/40, burned down almost completely in 1917; only parts of the facade are preserved.
  • A fountain from the Moorish era (Fuente de los Álamos) stands in the square in front of the Palacio de Villena .
  • The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . The construction of the church began in 1498, i.e. in the time of Isabella I , but it was only completed around 50 years later. The Renaissance portal on the south side is remarkable .
  • The Guardia Civil building dates from the end of the 19th century.
