During the Battle of Madrid at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War , several thousand political prisoners were probably murdered by republican militias by scheduled shootings on the banks of the Arroyo de San José river, which belongs to Paracuellos, in the vicinity of today's airport and in neighboring Torrejón de Ardoz in November 1936 . The exact number of deaths is unknown and controversial, serious estimates assume around 2,500 victims. The massacres began on November 7th and lasted until December 4th, 1936, the prisoners were brought in groups by bus from the Madrid prisons to the forest area. The victims were partisans of the insurgent nationalists from the military and the administrative apparatus, Catholic clergy and activists and other actual or suspected supporters of the nationalist uprising under Francisco Franco or opponents of the Popular Front government who were tracked down and imprisoned in Madrid after the outbreak of the civil war had been.
