history

Castillo de los Mendoza
Church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves

In 1987, Bronze Age cave paintings were found in La Pedriza, dating from between 1400 and 1200 BC. To be dated. Both from Celtic as well as from Roman and Islamic time missing to date archaeological recyclable products. In the 10th century and especially after the reconquest ( reconquista ) of Toledo (1085) the area was repopulated by Christians from the north, but also from the south of the Iberian Peninsula ( mudéjares ) . Conflicts arose between the new settlers, which were only resolved when King Alfonso X incorporated the area and other disputed communities into the crown and named it El Real de Manzanares . At the end of the 14th century, Juan I gave the area to Don Pedro González de Mendoza and El Real de Manzanares experienced its most splendid time in the 15th and 16th centuries .

Manzanares is the cradle of the autonomy of Madrid, because in 1982 the founding act of the Autonomous Community of Madrid took place in the castle of Manzanares.

Attractions

  • The striking castle ( Castillo de Manzanares ) , built around 1475, stands above a Romanesque- Mudéjar hermitage (ermita) , which can still be visited today. The ensemble with large arched windows consists of a rectangular inner courtyard and two galleries on octagonal columns. The main building has four Isabelline style towers adorned with spheres on the outer corners. The castle houses a museum of Spanish castles and a carpet collection.
  • A first church called Nuestra Señora de las Nieves was probably built in the early 14th century under the first Marquis of Santillana . It was probably rebuilt towards the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century and the portico (portico or gallería porticada) moved from the north to the south.

Numerous films have been shot in Manzanares Castle, including El Cid Campeador , Jeromín , Alexander the Great (1956) (USA, E 1956), The Fall of the Roman Empire (USA 1964) and La Rana verde .
