Canencia is a municipio in the comarca of Sierra Norte in the province and autonomous community of Madrid . The municipality has an area of ​​52.7 km² and a population of 447 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) with a population density of 8 inhabitants / km².

Geographical location

Canencia is located at 1144  m in the north-northeast open valley east of the stream of the same name, which flows into the Lozoya river , in the Sierra de Guadarrama . In the west the municipality is bounded by the mountains Espartal ( 1733  m ), Cerro del Águila ( 1663  m ), in the south by La Perdiguerra ( 1766  m ), Puerto de Canencia (pass height 1503  m ), Cabeza de la Braña ( 1772  m ) , Mondalindo / Cabeza del Cervanal ( 1831  m ).

history

Canencía, like most places in the Sierra, became after the conquest of Toledo by Alfonso VI. King of León and King of Castile repopulated by settlers from Segovia in 1085. Until 1813 the place belonged to the community of the city and the country Segovia (Comunidad de Ciudad y Tierra de Segovia) and then became part of the province of Madrid. In the middle of the 19th century the population increased to 700. In the middle of the 20th century the pass road was built over the Puerto de Canencia to Miraflores.

Canencia is 83 km from Madrid (distance). The pass road M-629 runs through the valley of Canencia from south (pass) to north (valley entrance from Lozoya valley). The town is connected to Miraflores de la Sierra through the Puerto de Canencia ( Canencia Pass - 1,600 m) in the south . In the north, the M-629 joins the M-604, which opens up the Loyoza valley in an east-west direction. From there to the east you can get to the A-1 motorway . From there west to Rascafría , the passes Puerto de Cotos and Puerto de Navacerrada to Segovia in the north or Madrid in the south.

The bus routes 194 and 195 connect the place with Madrid (Plaza Castilla).
