The Lozoya is a 91 kilometer long right northern tributary of the Río Jarama in the north of the autonomous community of Madrid in central Spain .
course
The Río Lozoya rises on the northern flank of the Peña del Águila in the Sierra de Guadarrama in the northwest of the autonomous region of Madrid . It flows first to the northeast and east, passing several reservoirs; finally it turns to the southeast and flows into the Río Jarama.
Tributaries
The Río Lozoya does not have any major tributaries, but after the snow melts or after prolonged or heavy rainfall, a large number of smaller streams flow into the river or into the reservoirs, most of which, however, quickly dry up again.
Reservoirs
In its upper reaches, the Río Lozoya has been dammed several times, the most important reservoirs are: Embalse de Pinilla, Embalse de Riosequillo, Embalse de Puentes Viejas, Embalse de El Villar and Embalse de El Atazar .
Isabella II Canal
In the years 1851-1858, at the instigation of the then Queen Isabella II, an approximately 77 km long canal with aqueducts and rock breakthroughs was built from Río Lozoya to Madrid , which, however, was partially destroyed during the Spanish Civil War . Although reservoirs and underground pipe systems are now taking over the city's water supply, there are always initiatives that aim to repair and maintain the historic canal structure.
