The Iberian Scheidegebirge (also Castilian Scheidegebirge , Central Cordillera and Spanish-Portuguese: Sistema Central or Cordillera Central ) is a mountain system in the center of the Iberian Peninsula . The highest point of the mountain range is the mountain Pico Almanzor with 2592 m height, which is located in the Sierra de Gredos .
geography
The Iberian Scheidegebirge runs in the western part from west to east and in the eastern part from southwest to northeast; it is about 700 kilometers long and extends from Portugal to the Iberian Mountains (Spanish: Sistema Ibérico ). The Iberian Scheidegebirge is divided into the main mountain ranges from east to west:
- Sierra de Guadarrama (2430 m)
- Sierra de Gredos (2592 m)
- Serra da Estrela (1993 m)
The mountain ranges on the Spanish side not only divide the Castilian highlands , but also separate Castile-Leon in the north from Castile-La Mancha and Extremadura in the south. Historically, the mountains were the border between Old Castile in the north and New Castile in the south. At the same time, the catchment areas of the Duero / Douro and Tajo / Tejo rivers ( both spelled in Spanish and Portuguese ) are separated by the Iberian Scheidegebirge .
