The Peñalara is the highest peak in the Sierra de Guadarrama with a height of 2430 m . This in turn is part of the Iberian Scheidegebirge , which lies in the middle of Spain and cuts through the Iberian Peninsula .

The eastern part of the mountain is in the area of ​​the municipality of Rascafría in the autonomous community of Madrid . Its western part is in the Valsaín Valley in the Segovia province . The peak is part of the Peñalara Natural Park , in the area of ​​which there are several small lakes and some steep cliffs.

The outline of the Peñalara is rounded with few overhangs. Its flanks are overgrown with different vegetation depending on the height. The animal population of the mountain consists of small mammals, a large number of insects and various species of birds such as eagles and vultures .

Peñalara massif

The Peñalara peak is the highest point of a mountain range of the same name. This massif stretches for 5.8 km, from the Cotos Pass ( 1830  m ) to the Pass of Los Neveros ( 2096  m ) and at the same time forms the border between the Autonomous Community of Madrid and Castile-León . The ridge carries the peaks from south to north:
