The Senefelderplatz on the east side of the southern section of the Schönhauser Allee and on the edge of Kollwitz Kiez in the Berlin district of Berg Prenzlauer located, was built in the 19th century as a result of Hobrecht plan as urban square in the midst of new residential streets. It has the shape of a pointed triangle facing south.

History and description

The square is limited to the north by Metzer Straße, to the east by Kollwitzstraße (formerly Weißenburger Straße ) and to the west by Schönhauser Allee. From around 1890 onwards, it was surrounded by tenement houses to the north and east and, according to the development plan, was initially called Platz A, Section XII . Around 1895 the area Thusneldaplatz was named after the wife of the Cheruscan prince Hermann .

The square was later redesigned according to Hermann Mächtig's plans . It is planted with lawn, bushes and trees. In 1892 the Carrara marble memorial for Alois Senefelder was erected at the southern end of the square. With the monument created by the Berlin sculptor Rudolf Pohle , the Berlin administration honored the inventor of lithography . Senefelder is shown sitting in contemporary clothing and has his tools ready. On the front of the monument two putti can be seen, one writing the name of the person to be honored in mirror writing, the other holding a hand mirror in front of it, with the help of which the writing can be read correctly. Four years after the unveiling of the monument, the square was renamed Senefelderplatz on June 7, 1896. Changes to the square resulted from the construction of the subway , the destruction of the surrounding residential buildings in the Second World War and the time-related decline. In 1994/1995 the Senate initiated extensive renovation work on the square. This mainly concerned the sculpture of the monument and a historical public lavatory in the form of a rotunda , a so-called " Café Achteck " ( location ). The until then only provisional barrier to the direct entrance from Schönhauser Allee to Kollwitzstraße was permanently expanded and included in the design of the square.

In the area around the square

The Jewish cemetery Schönhauser Allee joins on the north side of Metzer Strasse, where the Jewish walk begins .

There is also the subway station of the same name right under the square. The entire square including the underground station is a monument . The immediately restored town houses are also on the Berlin list of monuments.

The cafes and restaurants to the north and east of the square have been enjoying a lively influx of guests during the day since the access to the square was renovated. The scenery is also animated in the evening by the guests of the Pfefferberg cultural center on the west side of the square and the local pubs. The green area of Senefelderplatz itself is hardly used, as the heavy traffic on Schönhauser Allee reduces the quality of stay here. The open and green space north of the square, which was created by the war damage, has been built on with residential buildings and a hostel again since 2007 . Further overnight accommodations have also been built around Senefelderplatz.

A cooperative elementary school at Schönhauser Allee 165, a little to the northwest of the square, has been called "Schule am Senefelderplatz" for several years.
