Hermann Mächtig
Hermann Mächtig (born August 18, 1837 in Breslau , † July 1, 1909 in Berlin ) was a German gardener and from 1878 until his death in 1909, city gardener in Berlin. He was significantly involved in the construction of Treptower Park , the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery , Pariser Platz and numerous other Berlin city squares.
Life
Hermann Mächtig received his training as a gardener in 1852/1853 in his native city of Breslau and from 1854 to 1856 at the Royal Gardening School at the Wildlife Park near Potsdam . From 1864 he first worked as a senior assistant in the Royal Gardens in Potsdam with Peter Joseph Lenné and Gustav Meyer , at the same time as a lecturer in landscape gardening (1865–1872). In 1870 he became court gardener in the Potsdam Gardens.
When the position of director of the “Deputation for the administration of the municipal parks, gardens and trees” in Berlin had to be filled due to the death of Gustav Meyer, Mächtig took over this position in 1878. In all his designs and realized gardens, Mächtig represented a landscape gardening style, according to which “public gardens” should serve as places of movement, relaxation, places of sociable entertainment, also the enjoyment of nature, education and the refinement of customs .
