history

The Salamanca region, inhabited by the Vettone people in antiquity , belonged to the province of Lusitania during Roman rule , then to the Visigoth Empire and, from the 8th century, to the emirate or caliphate of Córdoba . From the 9th to the 11th centuries, the entire region was part of the belt of devastation between Córdoba and León before it fell to Castile along with León. When Castile-León was divided up in 1157, the region fell to the re-established Kingdom of León, but Salamanca became the target of the annexation desires of Portugal, which occupied Salamanca from 1162–1165. After a first failed attempt in 1179, Portugal occupied at least the border town of Ciudad Rodrigo in 1199–1200 . In 1230 Salamanca and León fell again or finally to Castile, apart from a renewed brief Portuguese occupation of Ciudad Rodrigos in 1296.
