About this picture

The province of Lugo is located in the north-west of Spain and belongs to the autonomous community of Galicia . The capital is the city of the same name, Lugo .

geography

The province of Lugo occupies the north-eastern part of Galicia. With 9,856.55 km² it is the largest province in the autonomous community in terms of area. It borders the Cantabrian Sea to the north, the provinces of Pontevedra and A Coruña to the west, the province of Ourense to the south and the Autonomous Communities of Asturias and Castile-León to the east .

Most of the province's landscape is mountainous. The foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains , which gradually descend towards the coast, extend into the eastern part of the province, including the Sierra de Ancares (1,826 m) and the Sierra del Courel (1,624 m). In the west there are several mountain groups belonging to the Galician system, such as El Faro (1,156 m). Plains are mainly found in the center around the city of Lugo and in the south near the second largest city, Monforte de Lemos . The seashore is torn and forms numerous rias . The main river of the province of Lugo is the Miño , which rises here and flows through the province in a southerly direction. When leaving the province, he takes up the Sil. In addition, several coastal rivers run towards the sea in the north, including the Navia , the Eo and the Landrove .

The Way of St. James reaches Galicia at the pass Puerto de Piedrafita (1,123 m) near O Cebreiro in the province of Lugo, which it crosses from there in an east-west direction.
