There are numerous archaeological finds from the time of the Celtic settlement and the Roman occupation . It is believed that the city was the ancient "Flavia Lambris", but there is no clear evidence of this. The name Viveiro goes back to the Roman bridge "Puente de Vivario". The village was destroyed during the Arab invasion but was immediately rebuilt. King Pelayo bestowed great privileges on the site for his assistance during the Reconquista . Around the year 844, the people of Viveiro suffered at least three attacks from Vikings . This is also where the legend of the Bishop of Mondoñedo, San Gonzalo, about the sinking of a dragon boat and its crew, through divine intervention, was born. The first written mention comes from the year 1112, from a deed of donation from Queen Urraca to what is now the diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol .
