Lugo is a city in the province of the same name in the Autonomous Region (Comunidade Autónoma) of Galicia in north-western Spain . It is traversed by the Rio Miño and has 98,276 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).
history
Lugo is the oldest city in Galicia. Its foundation goes back to the expansive policy of the Romans in the time of the emperor Augustus . This aimed, among other things, at pacifying the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula permanently. Attractions
- The old city center is completely surrounded by the more than two kilometers long Roman city wall of Lugo from the 3rd century, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 . - The Romanesque Cathedral of Santa Maria , episcopal church of the Roman Catholic diocese of Lugo , was built in the 12th century, but has also received Gothic , Baroque and neoclassical components in the course of its history . The Romanesque building replaced a first church from 755; it was completed in 1273. The cathedral received the title of minor basilica in 1896 .

Sports
In 2005 the world championships in three cushion were held in the Círculo de Las Artes . Daniel Sánchez was able to use his home advantage and beat the Dutchman Jean Paul de Bruijn in the final and get his second title after 1998. The fourth three-cushion World Cup was held in Lugo as early as 2001 .
