The Alcázar of Seville ( Spanish Reales Alcázares de Sevilla , German "Royal Alcázar of Seville") is the medieval royal palace of Seville . The complex has a long architectural history that goes back to Moorish times and is still used today by the Spanish royal family as an official residence when they are in Seville.
lock
The Alcázar was originally laid out as a Moorish fort , later the complex was expanded several times up to the palace. The Almohads were the first to build a palace, the Al-Muwarrak, on this site. Most of the modern facilities were built for Peter I on the Moorish ruins from 1364 onwards. The palace is one of the best-preserved examples of Mudejar architecture, the buildings that were built under Christian rule with Islamic influence. Later monarchs expanded the Alcázar, so that other architectural styles found their way into the complex. So z. B. under the Catholic Kings , Charles V and Philip II. Buildings with Gothic elements, which stand in stark contrast to the dominant Mudejar architecture.
One of the works of art is the painting The Virgin of the Navigators of a winged altar for the chapel in the Casa de Contratación .
Gardens
The gardens of the Alcázar go back to designs at the time of Charles V. They originally took up a larger area than today. Several development phases can be defined. The small-scale structure results from walls that provide protection against hot winds. Numerous buildings and statues adorn the gardens, including the Charles V pavilion, which dates back to a Moorish building. Today's maze dates from the beginning of the 20th century. The gardens, like the palace, are largely accessible, only the wing of the Palacio de Pedro I on the park side and the adjacent garden are closed off as the royal family's private residence.
