Úbeda is a city in the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia in the province of Jaén . On January 1, 2019, it had 34,345 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest city in this province. St. John of the Cross died here in 1591 .

Úbeda also became known through a chess tournament that took place in 1997 with Joël Lautier (France) as the winner and Alexander Beliavsky (Slovenia), Evgeni Barejew (Russia) and Alexander Chalifman .

Along with the 10 situated km City Baeza is Ubeda since 2003 on the list of World Heritage of UNESCO because of the role of the two cities at the forefront of the renaissance in Spain and the dissemination of humanistic ideas and Renaissance architecture in other countries. A Renaissance palace on the Plaza de Vázquez Molina is used as a Parador .
