economy
Canena is located in the center of the almost endless olive tree plantations in the province of Jaén. In the past, cereals, vines, etc. were also planted for self-sufficiency ; Vegetables came from the house gardens. Livestock (sheep, goats, chickens) and forestry are also operated. Small traders, craftsmen and service companies of all kinds have settled in the village. There are also several holiday homes (casas rurales) .
history
Small finds from the Neolithic and Bronze Age were discovered in the municipality . Some ruins near the hamlet of El Balneario date from Roman times . The Visigoths probably didn't get this far. At the beginning of the 8th century the area was overrun by the Moors . After the end of the Caliphate of Cordoba (1031), the area became part of the Taifa Kingdom of Jaén . Around the year 1226, the area was recaptured by the Christians ( reconquista ) and handed over to the Order of Santiago and the Calatrava Knights for military protection (cf. local coats of arms). Charles V (r. 1516–1556) sold the place in 1538 to his Secretary of State Francisco de los Cobos y Molina from Úbeda , who commissioned the building of the castle. With the Alhambra Edict (1492) of the Catholic Kings began the expulsion of the Sephardic Jews ; in the years around 1610 the last Muslims ( moriscos ) were also expelled.
Attractions
- The Castillo , planned by Andrés de Vandelvira around the middle of the 16th century, is a Renaissance palace with clear reminiscences of a medieval castle. The cloister-like inner courtyard is impressive .
- The Iglesia Parroquial de la Purísima Concepción , completed in 1564, is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary . An unadorned portal leads into the three-aisled interior of the church.
- The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is on the outskirts; it dates from the end of the 15th century, but was partially rebuilt in the 18th century.
- The building called El Molinillo is located on the Arroyo de la Yedra and was used for irrigation. One suspects Roman origins.
