The significant population decline in the second half of the 20th century is mainly due to the almost exclusive planting of olive trees, the mechanization that goes with it and the resulting loss of jobs.

economy

Aldeaquemada is located on the northern edge of the seemingly endless olive tree plantations of the Jaén province. In the past, cereals, vines, etc. were also planted for self-sufficiency ; Vegetables came from the house gardens. Today mainly potatoes and oats are grown. Small traders, craftsmen and service companies of all kinds have settled in the village. There are also several holiday homes (casas rurales) .

history

Prehistoric rock paintings have been discovered in the municipality . In ancient times and in the Middle Ages, the place, which probably did not exist at all, played no role, and so there was neither a Moorish conquest (conquista) nor a Christian reconquest ( reconquista ) . Settlement of parts of the Sierra Morena only took place during the reign of King Charles III. (r. 1759–1788) with the assistance of his advisor Johann Kaspar Thürriegel , who recruited colonists from southern Germany; other new settlers came from Switzerland and Italy.

Attractions

  • The uniform townscape of Aldeaquemada is characterized by its straight streets and its two-storey blocks of houses. The center of the place is a large paved square.
  • The single-nave Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción , built in the tradition of the Mudéjar style from bricks and plastered rubble stones, was built in the 18th century. The otherwise completely unadorned facade closes at the top in a bell gable (espadaña) . On both sides of the church are the former houses of ecclesiastical and secular dignitaries, which were built at the same time.
Cascada de Cimbarra
  • Opposite the church is the granary (Pósito) of the city in which the tithes of farmers were collected. The building now serves as the town hall (ayuntamiento) .
Surroundings
  • Approx. 2 km south of the village is the Cascada de Cimbarra , formed by the Río Guarrizas , one of the largest and most visited waterfalls in Spain.
