Linares is a Spanish industrial and commercial city in the northwest of the province of Jaén in the autonomous region of Andalusia . The number of inhabitants is 57,414 (as of January 1, 2019), the city area covers 197.92 km².
history
The area around Linares was already settled in pre-Roman times, but information about Linares is sparse before the Reconquista . The Roman Puente de Vadollano is an architectural testimony . Only the castle of Linares is mentioned, which after the liberation from the Arabs by the Christians served as the starting point for the further reconquest of Andalusia. In 1227 Fernando III conquered Linares Castle during the Reconquista . During the reign of Philip II it was named a villa.
The city was shaped by the lead mines in the area, the increased exploitation of which in the 19th century triggered enormous population and economic growth, from initially 6,000 in 1849 to 36,000 in 1877. Therefore, in 1875, it was elevated to the status of city . Today the mines are closed, but there are metalworking companies in and around Linares, such as B. Santana Motor , a license manufacturer of Suzukis and Land Rovers . In 1887 the Viaducto de Vadollano bridge was built.
Sports
Chess tournament
Linares is internationally known for the International Grand Masters Tournament in chess , which was established in 1978 and was one of the most popular in the world. The tournament was held 27 times. From 1988 it took place annually, with the exception of 1996. Since 2011 there has been no more event. The founder and financier was the hotelier Luis Rentero (1932–2015), who retired after an accident. The city then organized the tournament, which was divided into two parts in 2006, 2007 and 2008, with the first half taking place in Morelia , Mexico .
On March 18, 2005, the former world chess champion Garry Kasparov announced his retirement from professional chess after his shared tournament victory in Linares.
