The Puente de Vadollano is a Roman stone arch bridge in the province of Jaén in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain .

location

The historic Roman bridge with a length of 10 meters and an arch height of around 3.5 meters crosses the Río Guarrizas . It is located in the 6-hectare El Piélago nature reserve between the Municipios Vilches and Linares in a landscape of granite rocks through which the Guarrizas River plunges with two spectacular waterfalls, and is surrounded by ancient olive trees.

history

The 3rd century BC The bridge, which dates back to the 4th century BC, is one of the oldest surviving forms of construction of this type in Andalusia and is listed as a cultural monument (Monumento histórico) in the Bien de Interés Cultural list. The Puente de Vadollano belonged to the Roman road Via Augusta , which was mainly in the years 8 BC. Until 2 BC Was an important traffic and trade axis between the cities, provinces and Mediterranean ports.
