Larry Mark Christiansen (born June 27, 1956 in Riverside , California ) is an American chess player .

Life

At the Junior World Championships in Tjentište in 1975 Christiansen was vice world champion. In 1977 he was awarded the title of Grand Master by FIDE . He won the US championship three times: 1980, 1983 and 2002, also three times he won the US Open. Twice he qualified for the interzonal tournament , in which he was 9th in Moscow in 1982 and 8th in Szirák in 1987 . From 1980 to 2002 he played for the USA in nine Chess Olympiads . The US team won the silver medal in 1990, the bronze medal in 1982 , 1984 , 1986 and 1996 . Christiansen took part in the team world championship three times (1989, 1993, 1997). The United States team won the competition in 1993 and finished second in 1997, and Christiansen also achieved the second-best individual result on his board in his three participations (1989 as the first reserve player, 1993 and 1997 as the second reserve player).

In 1979 he won the traditional Linares tournament in front of Viktor Korchnoi . Two years later he achieved a shared first place (with world champion Anatoli Karpov ). Christiansen won important tournaments in Cologne in 1988, Wiesbaden in 1994, Reykjavík in 1998 and Essen in 1999. From 1987 to 1997 he also played in the German Federal Chess League for SG Porz . He was German team champion in 1994 and 1996 and achieved a result of 12 points from 13 games on board 2 in the 1989/90 season . Christiansen also took part in the 1992 European Club Cup with SG Porz . In the United States Chess League , he played for Boston Blitz from 2005 to 2011 .

Christiansen is considered a tactical attacking player. He has published a number of chess books and is a highly respected commentator at the Internet Chess Club , where he occasionally provides audio commentary on live broadcasts at top international tournaments. Christiansen is married to Natasha (* 1962), who holds the title of Candidate Master in Women (WCM).
