This list of the most important chess tournaments includes chess tournaments that are historically significant. The first historical international championship tournament is known from 1575. In Madrid Giovanni Leonardo da Cutri won in front of his Sicilian compatriot Paolo Boi and the author of a famous chess book, Ruy López de Segura from Spain. However, it was a singular event. Well-known chess tournaments were only held again in the 19th century.

The first international chess tournament of modern times took place in 1851 on the sidelines of the London World's Fair . In Germany, the first chess tournament was held on September 7th and 8th, 1862 in Düsseldorf . Of the eight participants, Max Lange took first place ahead of Otto Wülfing .
