The beginnings

When Akobian was five years old, his father had a long work assignment in Mongolia . There he learned to play chess at his father's request, as he shouldn't play outside because of the adverse climate. When the family returned to Armenia two years later, he went to the Tigran Petrosyan chess school , named after the former world champion . In January 2001, Akobian moved to California , where he acquired American citizenship and has played for the US Chess Federation since 2002 .

In Armenia he was trained by IM Ashot Nadanyan and Gagik Sarkissjan.

In the USA he won more than a dozen tournaments from 2001 onwards. In 2004 he became a grandmaster . He achieved the first norm for this in July 2002 at the 30th World Open in Philadelphia (which he won in the 32nd edition in 2004 and in the 35th edition in 2007), the second norm at the Imre Konig invitation tournament in September 2002 in San Francisco and the third standard November 2003 at the Eduard Gufeld Memorial in Los Angeles . He won the San Marino Open in 2006 with an Elo rating of 2800. In July 2007 he was second behind Julio Ernesto Granda Zúñiga at the Continental Championships in Cali .
