Smbat Lputjan ( Armenian Սմբատ Լպուտյան , in scientific transliteration Smbat Lpowtyan , in English transcription Smbat Lputian , also Smbat Lboutian ; born February 14, 1958 in Yerevan ) is an Armenian chess player and official. The correct pronunciation, which cannot be reproduced with German letters, is [ sǝm'bat lǝpu'tjan ].

successes

Smbat Lputjan won the championship of the Armenian SSR in 1978 and 1980 . In 1982 he received the title International Master and 1984 Grand Master . In the course of his career he won several international tournaments: Berlin 1982, Athens 1983, Irkutsk 1983, Sarajevo 1985, Irkutsk 1986, Hastings 1986/87 (shared with Murray Chandler , Jonathan Speelman and Bent Larsen ), Dortmunder Schachtage 1988, Yerevan 1988, Blagoweschensk 1988, Uschhorod 1988, Altensteig 1989, Rimavská Sobota 1991, Dortmund-Open 1992 (together with Wladimir Kramnik and Surab Asmaiparaschwili ), Yerevan 1996 (shared with Predrag Nikolić ), Wijk aan Zee -B 1999, Yerevan 2000 (zonal tournament) and 2001 ( Armenian Championship), Port Erin 2003 (shared with Simen Agdestein ). His best result in the USSR Championship was a tied fifth place in 1984 in Lviv .

In 1990 he qualified by a shared victory (with Alexei Schirow , Alexei Drejew and Leonid Judassin ) at the zone tournament in Lviv for the Manila interzonal tournament . In 1993 he won the zone tournament in Protvino and then took part in the Biel interzonal tournament.

He is listed as inactive at FIDE because he has not played a rated game since the European Club Cup 2008 in Chalkidiki .

Smbat Lputjan is the Vice President of the Armenian Chess Federation . In 2004 he was awarded the title of FIDE Senior Trainer.

National team

In 2006 he celebrated one of his greatest successes when he won the Chess Olympiad in Turin with Armenia . Overall, he played for Armenia at all eight Chess Olympiads from 1992 to 2006. In 1992, 2002 and 2004 Armenia won bronze. He received a silver medal in 1992 for his individual result on board 3 and 1998 on board 2. He also took part in the team world championships in 1993, 1997, 2001 and 2005 (where he achieved third place with the team in 1997, 2001 and 2005 and in 1997 the best individual result on the third board), as well as in the European team championships in 1992, 1997, 1999, 2005 and 2007. With the Armenian team he was European team champion in 1999, came second in 2007 and third in 1997.

Lputjan was active in club chess in several countries, so he was Armenian team champion with Bank King Yerevan in 2006 and 2007 , played in the Russian team championship for Southern Ural Chelyabinsk and in the Bosnian Premier League for ŠK Kiseljak . Lputjan won the European Club Cup in 1986 and 1988 with CSKA Moscow , 1994 with ŠK Bosna Sarajevo and 1995 with Yerevan .
