Gabriel Sarkissjan ( Armenian Գաբրիել Սարգսյան , other transcriptions are Sarkissian (English) in scientific transliteration Gabriel Azati Sargsyan ; born September 3, 1983 in Yerevan ) is an Armenian chess player . The correct pronunciation of his name is [gabri'ɛl sarkǝs'jan].

successes

In 1996 he became U14 World Champion in Menorca and U16 European Champion in Mureck in 1998 . In 1999 he became international master , 2002 grand master . In 2000 and 2003 he became the Armenian champion. In 2006 he made his breakthrough on an international level. He won only two major tournaments in Dubai and Reykjavík and then won the gold medal at the Chess Olympiad in Turin with the Armenian national team . Sarkissjan scored 10 points from 13 games, where he achieved a tournament performance ("Performance") of 2736 Elo points . In March 2007 he won a category XV grandmaster tournament (Elo average 2607) in Zafra (Spain) with 6.5 points from 7 games, with which he achieved an exceptionally high performance of 3021 points.

He was trained by Aschot Nadanjan . Sarkissjan works as a second for his compatriot Levon Aronjan .

National team

Sarkissjan took part with the Armenian national team in all eight chess Olympiads since 2000 . He became Olympic champion with the team in 2006 , 2008 and 2012 and reached third place in 2002 and 2004 , in the individual ranking he achieved the best individual result on the third board in 2008. He also took part in the World Team Championships in 2010, 2011 (which he won with Armenia), 2013 and 2015 and the European Team Championships in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017. At the European Team Championships in 2007 he reached second place with Armenia, in the individual ranking he won on the third board in 2009 and came second on the fourth board in 2011.

In Armenia, Zarkissjan played for MIKA Yerevan , with whom he was Armenian team champion in 2008 and 2009 and took part in the European Club Cup four times . In the German Federal Chess League he played for SV Wattenscheid from 2004 to 2006 and for SC Kreuzberg from 2006 to 2009 . In the Chinese team championship 2011 he played for Tianjin Nankai University , in the French top 16 from 2004 to 2006 for Echiquier Nanceien and in 2008 for Bischwiller . Sarkissjan has been playing in Spain since 2005 for the CA Linex Magic Mérida team , with whom he was Spanish team champion in 2006 , 2007 and 2009 and won the 2007 European Club Cup. He won the Belgian Interclubs in 2008 with Bredene and the Asian Club Cup in 2008 with the Al-Ain Chess Club .
