División de Honor (chess) 2009

The División de Honor (chess) 2009 was the 15th season of the División de Honor and at the same time the 53rd Spanish team championship in chess , it was played with twelve teams. The champions were the team of CA Linex-Magic Mérida, while the defending champion CCA CajaCanarias Santa Cruz not only missed the finals, but even relegated to the Primera División. UGA Barcelona, ​​CA Universidad de Oviedo, UE Montcada and CA Jaime Casas Monzón were promoted from the Primera División. UGA Barcelona were the only newcomers to stay in the league, while the other climbers were relegated directly.

mode

The twelve participating teams played a simple round-robin tournament in two preliminary groups with six teams each . In both groups, the first two qualified for the finals, while the last two were relegated to the Primera División. The game was played on six boards, the number of board points (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no point for a defeat) and then the number of team points (two points for a win, one point) decided the placement for a tie, no point for a loss). The final round was played in the knockout system , with third place also being played out.

Dates and venue

The first preliminary round was played from September 20 to 24 in Lugo , the second from September 16 to 20 in Montcada i Reixac . The final round was held in Linares on November 7th and 8th .

Semifinals

The semifinals saw two clear decisions.

Final and 3rd place match

While Gros XT clearly prevailed in the game for 3rd place, the decision in the final was tight. In five draws, Fabiano Caruana's victory over Alexander Graf on the fifth board was the decisive factor for Mérida.
