Primera División (chess) 1981
The Primera División (chess) 1981 was the top division of the 25th Spanish team championship in chess and was played with ten teams. Champion was the defending champion CE Vulcà Barcelona, Círculo Mercantil San Sebastián and CA La Caja de Canarias were promoted from the Segunda División. While San Sebastián achieved relegation, CA La Caja de Canarias rose together with Asociación Barcinona directly from again.

mode
The ten participating teams played a simple round-robin tournament , the last two were relegated and replaced by the first two of the Segunda División. The game was played on four boards, the number of board points (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no point for a defeat), then the number of team points (two points for a win, one point) decided the placement for a tie, no point for a loss).

The tournament was held in Calella .
Season course
CE Vulcà Barcelona and UGA Barcelona fought a duel for the title, while the rest of the field played against relegation. All decisions were only made in the last lap.
