The Spanish team championship in chess in 1973 was the 17th edition of this competition. This was last played with 16 teams in the preliminary and final round, from 1974 the Spanish team championship was held in the league system with promotion and relegation. The new champions became the team of CA Caja Insular de Ahorros, which relegated the defending champion CA Schweppes Madrid to second place.
The 16 participating teams were divided into four preliminary round groups of four teams each and played a simple round-robin tournament in these . The first two of each group contested the final round, the last two the qualifying tournament for the Primera División and Segunda División of the 1974 Spanish team championship, with teams from the same preliminary group not playing against each other again, but rather the result of the direct comparison from the preliminary round to the final round or that Qualification tournament. For the Primera División of the Spanish team championship 1974, the participants of the finals as well as the first two of the qualifying tournament qualified, for the Segunda División the third and fourth of the qualifying tournament (the remaining starting places were played in regional events). The game was played on four boards, the number of board points (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no point for a defeat), then the number of team points (two points for a win, one point) decided the placement for a tie, no point for a loss).
While the situation in groups A, B and D was clear, in group C only the direct comparison decided on the second place.

Qualifying tournament for the 1974 Spanish team championship
CA Barcelona were in a class of their own and won the tournament by superiority, while Asociación Barcinona was temporarily in last place, but with four clear victories in the end climbed to second place.
