The Spanish team championship in chess in 1972 was the 16th edition of this competition, this was held with 16 teams. The defending champion CA Schweppes Madrid won his fifth title in a row by a clear margin.
The 16 participating teams were divided into four preliminary round groups of four teams each and played a simple round-robin tournament in these . Each group included two seeded teams (the eight supposedly strongest teams were seeded) and two unset teams. The first two in each group contested the final round, with teams from the same preliminary round group not playing against each other again, but instead taking the result of the direct comparison from the preliminary round into the final round. For the Spanish team championship in 1973, the top seven of the finals qualified. The game was played on four boards, the number of board points (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no point for a defeat), then the number of team points (two points for a win, one point) decided the placement for a tie, no point for a loss).
Dates and venue
The tournament was held from July 3rd to 11th. The preliminary round competitions were played in Granada , the final round competitions in Lanjarón .

With one exception, the seeded teams lived up to their role as favorites: In Group A, GE Aviaco Madrid had to be content with third place.
