Primera División (chess) 1980
The Primera División (chess) 1980 was the top division of the 24th Spanish team championship in chess and was played with ten teams. The champions were the team of CE Vulcà Barcelona, while the defending champion UGA Barcelona had to be content with third place. Círculo Mercantil Sevilla and CA Jersa Alicante were promoted from the Segunda División. While Seville achieved relegation, Alicante rose directly back down together with CA Caja de Ahorros Málaga.

mode
The ten participating teams played a simple round-robin tournament , the last two were relegated and replaced by the first two of the Segunda División. The game was played on four boards, the number of board points (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no point for a defeat), then the number of team points (two points for a win, one point) decided the placement for a tie, no point for a loss).
Dates and venue
The tournament was held in Santander from August 19-27 .
Season course
CE Vulcà Barcelona was in the lead for almost the entire tournament and ended up winning by three points. The question of relegation was decided in the last round against CA Caja de Ahorros Málaga and CA Jersa Alicante.
