Yarmouth County is one of the 18 counties in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia (Nova Scotia). It lies in the west of the province and is bordered by Digby County to the north and Shelburne County to the south . The county has its administrative center in Yarmouth .
In the 2,124.64 km² administrative unit lived 25,275 inhabitants in 2011, resulting in a population density of 11.9 inhabitants / km². Compared to the census from 2006, the number of inhabitants has decreased again. The population has recently decreased by 3.8% and is continuing the last ongoing downward trend. The county is one of the smallest counties in the province and is in the middle of all counties in terms of population and population density.
The county is connected to the rest of the provincial highway network via Nova Scotia Highway 101 and Highway 103 . The county is connected to the air traffic via Yarmouth Airport ( IATA code : YQI, ICAO code : CYQI). For many years there was a ferry service from Yarmouth operated by Bay Ferries Limited to Bar Harbor and Portland , both in Maine .
history
Even before it was discovered by Europeans, this area was a settlement and hunting area for First Nations , the Mi'kmaq . Acadians were among the first settlers of European descent in this area . Before the area became an independent county in 1836, it belonged to Lunenburg County (until 1761), Queens County (1784) and finally Shelburne County. The origin of the name is controversial. According to the two prevailing theories, the name goes back either to an older settlement with the same name in Massachusetts or to Amalie Sophie von Wallmoden, Countess of Yarmouth , the mistress of George II .

Yarmouth County has the town of Yarmouth and a First Nations reservation. All other settlements are either in the District municipality of Argyle or the District municipality of Yarmouth .
