Historic building in Yarmouth |
Yarmouth is a city and an important fish and ferry port on the Gulf of Maine in the south of Nova Scotia , Canada and at the same time the administrative seat of the administrative district of the same name.
Initially called Port Forchu, Yarmouth was founded in 1759 and registered as a city in 1890. During the 19th century Yarmouth was an important center of shipbuilding . At times, more ships were built than in any other port in the world. The city lost its importance with the steamship . Today Yarmouth lives, among other things, from fishing for fish and lobster, from the ferry port and from tourism.
tourism
Since the late 19th century, when passenger services with steam ships to New York City and Boston have been offered is tourism the main industry in Yarmouth. The ferry connections were maintained until the Second World War . In the 1950s, the Canadian National Railways started a ferry service to Bar Harbor ( Maine ), which was continued by CN Marine and Marine Atlantic until 1997.
In 1998 the implementation of the connection to Bar Harbor was transferred to Bay Ferries Limited . The ferry connection was served from 2002 with the high-speed catamaran HSC Incat 059 , called "The Cat". In 2009, the ferry line operator announced that operations would no longer continue in 2010.
The American ferry company Prince of Fundy Cruises also started a ferry connection between Portland (Maine) and Yarmouth in the 1970s , which Scotia Prince Cruises maintained until April 2005. From the summer of 2006, the ferry service from Maine to Yarmouth was only maintained by Bay Ferries Limited. In 2014, Nova Star Cruises took over the route with a newly built ferry that has been commuting between Portland and Yarmouth every day since then.
Sights are the lighthouse, the harbor and the Yarmouth County Museum, which offers a deep insight into the history of Nova Scotia. Otherwise, Yarmouth is largely the arrival and departure point for travelers to Southeast Canada.
Culture
The area around Yarmouth is still an Acadian region and is therefore partly inhabited by the Francophone population.
