Ryan Graves (born May 21, 1995 in Yarmouth , Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League since February 2018 and plays for them on the position of defender .

Career

youth

Ryan Graves was born in Yarmouth and played in his youth for the South Shore Mustangs and the Yarmouth Mariners in regional youth leagues. For the 2011/12 season he moved to Prince Edward Island- based PEI Rocket from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), which had selected him in ninth position in the 2011 Entry Draft . At the Rocket, he established himself in the following years as a defensive-oriented defender who, due to his above-average physique, was particularly noticeable with physically robust ice hockey. As a result, he was also considered in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in 110th position by the New York Rangers . With the beginning of the 2013/14 season, the PEI Rocket changed their name to Charlottetown Islanders , while the Canadian was only active for half a season for the franchise . In January 2014 he was given a third-round vote for the draft to the Foreurs de Val-d'Or , while the Islanders Wladislaw Lyssenko and David Henley received. With the Foreurs, who had the later NHL players Anthony Mantha and Antoine Bibeau in their ranks, the defender won the LHJMQ playoffs for the Coupe du Président at the end of the 2013/14 season . In the subsequent Memorial Cup 2014 , the team failed in the semi-finals at the eventual winner, the Edmonton Oil Kings . In August 2014 he was transferred to the Remparts de Québec , with whom he again reached the final for the Coupe du Président, but there was defeated by the Océanic de Rimouski . A little later, the host also took part in the 2015 Memorial Cup , where another defeat in the semi-finals followed. However, Graves was personally elected to the tournament's All-Star Team.

In March 2014, the New York Rangers had given the defender an entry-level contract . After four years in the junior division, he switched to their organization for the 2015/16 season, where he was initially employed in their farm team in the American Hockey League , at the Hartford Wolf Pack . He represented the "wolf pack" in his rookie season at the AHL All-Star Classic . Overall, he showed about two and a half years of constant performance in Hartford, but without coming to a use in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Broadway Blueshirts . Finally, in February 2018, it was given to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Chris Bigras .

The Avalanche also used the defender for the time being in their AHL farm teams, the San Antonio Rampage or, from the following season, the Colorado Eagles , before he finally made his NHL debut for Colorado at the end of December 2018. In the Avalanche line-up, Graves established himself at the latest by the start of the 2019/20 season, where he stood out for his outstanding plus / minus statistics, for example, leading the league in this category in December and January. With a value of +40, this was also the case at the end of the season that was ultimately shortened.

International

His only international tournament to date was the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2012 , where he finished seventh with the Canada Atlantic team .
