Brian Paul Engblom (born January 27, 1955 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (defender) who played national hockey for the Canadiens de Montréal , Washington Capitals , Los Angeles Kings , Buffalo Sabers and Calgary Flames from 1976 to 1987 League played.
Career
Engblom studied at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and played for their ice hockey team. The professional teams became aware of him because of his good performance. In the 1974 WHA Amateur Draft , the Winnipeg Jets , a team from his hometown, secured the rights for the World Hockey Association in the second round as 22. A year later, also in the second round as 22, it was the Canadiens de Montréal who tried to tie him to the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft .
He chose Montreal, where he was used in the first year with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs in the American Hockey League . After another year in Nova Scotia, the Canadiens brought him to the playoffs in 1977 in their squad. There he helped the team to win the Stanley Cup with two appearances , but was not immortalized on the trophy due to fewer appearances. He made up for this with two further successes in 1978 and 1979 .
The jump into the NHL was made, but next to Larry Robinson , Guy Lapointe and Serge Savard there was little room for much ice age. With a lot of effort and constant defensive work, he earned a regular place and led the league in the 1980/81 season in the plus / minus rating. In a large swap he was given to the Washington Capitals for the 1982/83 season together with Rod Langway , Doug Jarvis and Craig Laughlin , who in return sent Rick Green and Ryan Walter to Montreal.
After a year with the Capitals, he was handed over to the Los Angeles Kings for Larry Murphy shortly after the start of the 1983/84 season . In late January 1986 he joined the Buffalo Sabers together with Doug Smith until the end of the season . There was another move to the Calgary Flames before the 1986/87 season , but after 32 games, a neck injury suffered in December 1986 ended his career.
